Young men in the United States and Australia burned their draft cards in protest against the Vietnam War in the 1960s-70s. This nonviolent tactic was first publicized by Eugene Keyes, a 22 year old conscientious objector who set fire to his draft card on Christmas 1963. Many of the young men who participated in draft card burning were not arrested, even though the action is illegal. In the US, the draft became obsolete after President Nixon ended the draft in 1973.
