On March of 2011, the first demonstrations of the Syrian revolution were taking place. A young man named Islam Dabbas was convinced to use a tactic of fraternization. Rather than yelling personal insults and rioting at soldiers, Islam was leading the front-line bringing water bottles and flower bouquets to soldiers. Demonstrators like Islam that used fraternization would try to connect with soldiers on a personal level and persuade them to not use violence and to potentially defect to the opposition.
