In a demonstration of opposition to the Indian government’s reform of the National Pension System (NPS), over 20,000 government employees refused to work and gathered at St. Paul’s College in Ranchi, India. Union and community representatives had previously unanimously supported the National Movement for Old Pension System (NMOPS), and took a stand against the Indian government adopting a new program which left state employee’s pensions to the whims of the market, not providing a state guarantee to match all mandated contributions. With the large protest, greater visibility was garnered by the NMOPS movement, which gave greater bargaining power to the unions and community organizations over the government.
