General Strike to Disrupt Public Services
On May 29, 2018, labor unions in Greece called for a 24-hour general strike to disrupt public transport and services to protest the government's ongoing austerity. Hospitals had skeleton staffing. There were no trains or suburban railway services, and no rail links to Athens International Airport; ferries were moored and flights were disrupted.
Indian General Strike of 2016
On September 2, 2016, throughout India, public sector workers took part in what was called “the world’s largest-ever” action. Workers united against Prime Minister Modi's plans for increased privatization and other economic policies. Unions in the banking, health, transport, and agriculture industries went on strike for 24-hours. They produced a list of demands for the Indian government including, a 692-rupee daily minimum wage, universal social security, and a ban on foreign investment in India's public sector. The action occurred in areas where the opposition party had greater influence like Karnataka and Kerala. The strike was meant to emphasize the value of the workers in the public sector and highlight how detrimental Modi’s economic plans would be for those very workers.
