In 2019, leaders of the Left Democratic Alliance in Bangladesh called on citizens to come out to the street from 6:00am to 2:00pm on July 7th to participate in a countrywide hartal. The hartal was set in place to protest the gas price hike in Bangladesh, which happened despite opposition from many citizens. The gas prices were raised due to the rising import costs of liquified natural gas. Supporters of the left stated that this would increase the suffering of the common people, leading to the hartal.
