Algerian Judges Refuse to Oversee Election Poll
On March 2019, widespread protests and demonstrations occurred around Algeria once President Abdelaziz Bouteflika announced his decision to run for a fifth term. Over his 20-year rule, the lack of economic opportunity for young Algerians and the corruption of the governing elite became widespread. Furthermore, President Bouteflika had not given a public address and had rarely appeared in public since his stroke in 2013. As a country without a visible leader, the people were backed by the judges who stated that they will not act against the will of the people. Over 1,000 judges announced that they would abstain from supervising the elections and polls. The judicial agents’ nonviolent refusal to carry out their duty sent a message of peaceful protest in support of the Algerian people.
