In January 2017, the Women's March in Los Angeles was a powerful setting for women to publicly discuss how powerful men in the entertainment industry in Hollywood have sexually assalted and harrassed many women without a voice. At the March, speeches were given that displayed the impacts that this sexual misconduct has had on many women. The speeches were given by many well-known women, such as Scarlett Johansson and Viola Davis. The speeches were focused to justify the need for systemic change and to ensure that women live with a state of respect, not fear.
Venezuelan Activist's Speech Criticizing Government
In 2017, Venezuelan opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez gave a speech explaining why he was going to turn himself in to law enforcement, and the death of Venezuelan democracy. Lopez intended on calling out the injustices faced by the citizens of Venezuela, and how he hoped that his imprisonment would awaken the Venzuelan people, and highlight the broken parts of Venezualn society. Lopez focused on the need for change in their democracy, and how going to jail for that change was worth it. Lopez stated in his speech “that all of us here today, all Venezuelans who want change, to get informed, educated and organized, and to carry out a nonviolent protest, a massive demonstration of freewill, hearts and souls of the people who want change.”
